Although Germany is celebrated worldwide for its beer, it also occupies a space among the elite wine-producing
nations because of its white wines, particularly Riesling. This is considered one of the world's greatest white wines
and, consequently, Germany is sixth in the world in white wine output -- producing 20 % as much as France. Other very
good German white wines are made from Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Müller-Thurgau, and several other
grapes.
Austrian wine dates back to the dawn of civilization. An archaeological find in the Burgenland town of Zagendorf near
Eisenstadt - close to the Hungarian border - uncovered a funeral mound dating from the Hallstatt period (circa 700 BC).
Inside the grave were clay vessels containing grape pips that were identified as vitis vinifera, the grape still used
today for making wine.
Austria is recognized for producing world-class white wines
though the rarer red wines perform well at international
presentations and blind tastings. As far as sweet wines are concerned, Austria is blessed with the perfect conditions
for true greatness -- especially around Lake Neusiedl -- and these wines have long since been recognized as some of
the finest in the world.
