Greg Brewer and Diatom

Posted August 19, 2010 in Wine, Wine Everywhere, Winemakers

Greg Brewer is taking Chardonnay is a different direction. Everyone knows the big, buttery style and a growing number are moving to the “unoaked” version. Greg has done a little of both but with the tiny production Diatom wines, he is clearly moving in a direction all his own. Diatom is all Chardonnay done in stainless steel and the purest expression of the fruit from the Santa Rita Hills. His philosophy on creating single-vineyard, stainless Chardonnay is simple-

“Why should the best fruit be covered with the most expensive oak? The best fruit should be allowed to shine without oak.”

This is a wine project after his own personality. Watching him talk is fascinating as he bounces from one point to another, but making each one clearly. He has so much energy sitting still he almost vibrates! The wines are, of course, spectacular. They are, however, not for everyone. They are lean and racy, with an almost sake quality to them. I hate this term, but they are a very cerebral wine. They are meant to think over and about. It is probably a good thing they are not for everyone. It leaves more for us to share with those ENO guests “in the know.” Check out Greg as he discusses his wines.
